Di Michae Spalt abbiamo già parlato in questa rubrica, a proposito della chitarra Harley Davidson che mi sono fatto costruire da lui. Questa volta parliamo di altre tre sue creazioni, una delle quali particolarmente famosa. E’ il caso di “Gears”, la chitarra di Michael più pubblicata su libri e monografie dedicati agli strumenti americani. L’idea gli venne dopo aver visitato un vecchio negozio di elettronica che svendeva tutto prima di chiudere. Dopo aver realizzato il corpo, si accorse che, a causa della gran quantità di parti metalliche, la chitarra pesava molto. Ma alla fine si convinse a terminarla con un manico in mogano e palissandro, riducendo il più possibile il peso della tavola.
“E’ uno strumento spettacolare – scrive sul suo sito – anche se ancora un po’ pesante!”.
La seconda mi ha attratto per motivi che interessano sicuramente i visitatori di Gorgelous: gli elementi che la costituiscono sono blocchetti di legno su cui una volta venivano inseriti i caratteri di piombo e la lastra di rame che si usava un tempo per stampare le foto. Da vecchio copywriter, non ho saputo resistere.
Come musicista non ho potuto resistere ad acquistare da GBL un’altra magnifica creazione di Michael: si chiama Billy Holiday, perchè c’è una vecchia foto della grande cantante con il suo cane, oltre a pezzi di cassette di liquori e coca-cola trovate in un vecchio locale dove si suonava jazz.

We already discussed Michael Spalt in this series, and the custom-built Harley Davidson guitar he made for me. Now it’s time for two more of his creations, one of which is particularly famous. “Gears” is Michael’s most published guitar in books and monographs about American instruments. The idea came to him after visiting an old electronics store which was having its final sale and closing down. After creating the soundboard he realized that, because of the large amount of metal parts, the guitar weighed a lot. Eventually, he decided to complete it with a neck made of mahogany and rosewood, carving out as much weight as he could from the soundboard. “It’s a spectacular guitar – he writes on his site – although still a bit too heavy!”
The other piece attracted me for reasons that will surely resonate with Gorgelous readers: it is made with the small wooden blocks once used to set lead type and with an old copper photographic plate. As a former copywriter, I could not resist.
As a musician I could not resist to buy from GBL another terrific creation of Michael: his name is Billy Holiday, because there is an old photo of the singer with his dog, as well as pieces of boxes of liquor and coca-cola found in an old club where they played jazz.
